RCIA Prayer Sessions: Introduction

Throughout the RCIA program, you will listen to others talk to you about a wide variety of topics important to understanding our core Catholic Christian beliefs. This is certainly an important way to learn.

However, there are two things lacking in this approach to learning about our faith. The first is that it focuses on external rather than internal knowledge. The second, is that it presents that knowledge through lectures, and most adults learn best through experiences.

So, to supplement this external learning, each week we will engage in a new prayer form together. The hope is that through these prayers, that first, you will find a style of prayer that works well for you (not every form of prayer works well for every person); that second, you will learn about your faith through internal experience in addition to external knowledge; that third, you will be able to continue that learning on your own through out the week; and fourth, that you will be able to share that learning with others in your life - if you're up to the challenge.

Each week will be like dipping your toes in the ocean: the brief experience of a prayer form in which we engage just barely begins to plumb the depths available to the dedicated practitioner of that form. Remember this. And if a prayer form resonates with you, even slightly, explore it more deeply by engaging in it regularly. One of the great things about prayer is that it doesn't require books, just a willing and creative heart.

There's only a very slight order to the way in which we'll pass through different prayer forms, and certainly the forms in which we'll engage are not a complete survey of all the different forms of prayer practiced by the rich and diverse family of the Church. But the hope is that the forms are broad enough to introduce you to and entice you towards one or more prayer forms that connect your heart with God.

Generally, we'll move from more structured prayer forms to less structured prayer forms. All of these forms have rich traditions behind them, and all are worthy of a lifetime of practice.
